Volunteer Mentors

Our service area includes Hartford, Tolland, Windham and Middlesex counties. Right now we have approximately 300 children on our Waiting List. 80% of the children on this Waiting List are boys.

This means, of course, that we are very much in need of male volunteers - especially African American, West Indian and Latino male volunteers. Needless to say, if you're a woman don't let this discourage you from investigating the possibility of becoming a mentor. We have many children who would greatly benefit from a role model just like you. Click here to download a Volunteer Application.

In addition, please tell your friends, colleagues etc. about the important work Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters is doing with youngsters. For instance, in a national study of 975 children with similar family situations it was learned that children matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister were:

46% less likely than their peers to start using illegal drugs

27% less likely than their peers to start drinking

52% less likely than their peers to skip a day of school

37% less likely than their peers to skip a class
